Look at us. Hey! Look at us. Who would've thought? Not me.
Quick little note: I originally wrote this post back in March/April when we first went into a "lockdown/quarantine" and since then I've changed the title twice. But honestly, these are some things to get you through life in general.
Who would've thought that a pandemic would've brought me back to writing? (Also, let's be real, not really.) Honestly, not me. It's hard to get out of bed to finish a degree that I worked hard for five years just to have a virtual graduation ceremony. But you know, you didn't click this for that content.
One thing that is getting me through this time of social distancing is music. For me, music has always been the answer (Truly angry at myself that I no longer have my cello for me to play). It keeps me focused and gets me through those long and draining assignments, and it gives me a break during this uncertain time.
Honestly, these songs get my body moving which is something that I desperately need during this time. When these songs are on, I am singing along and having a dance party in my room at the top of my lungs (my mom's neighbors hate me).
Here's a link to my entire 'positive' vibes playlist (I play it at least once a day to give me motivation). If there's a song that's not on here that you think should be on here, please let me know!! Also, as I mentioned in a previous post, I have over 2,000 songs in my Spotify library, and I only chose 10.
Anyway, here's the top 10 songs that will get you through quarantine.
10. Perfect Places by Lorde
From her sophomore album, Melodrama, Lorde created the perfect bop to remind you of good times. If I were being completely honest, the bias that I hold for Lorde is astronomical. Lorde's voice is honestly angelic. When she speaks about her music, she describes it as the sound transcribing into colors and that she sees color when creating music. With that knowledge, when you listen to her albums, you can picture certain
9. Unforgettable (feat. Swae Lee) - Major Lazer Remix by French Montana
Surprised? I hope not! This playlist is composed of so many different remixes that I wouldn't normally listen to (I think that remixes sometimes ruin the song, don't come at me). This song definitely rivals the original, just a little more upbeat which will get your body moving! Very different from his 'Pop That' days.
8. hot girl bummer by blackbear
Not going to lie with this one, I am very behind on what's popping. It took until last summer for me to discover this song, and completely fall in love with it. This song has two of my favorite things: scales and swears. blackbear really went there with this song and I bop to it almost every time I'm in the car. In an interview with Genius, blackbear describes his inspiration for this song as, "[being on] Instagram and I don’t know who made it up really, but I just kept seeing, all summer I kept seeing this hot girl summer thing and I was like, “okay, I got it, you know, whatever.” But for me, I’m more an introvert and I wasn’t having a hot girl summer, personally. I was having a hot girl bummer, so I wanted to make a song just for the people that weren’t really out there posing in their bikinis and not really out there so much, you know?"
7. Make Me (Cry) - Marshmello Remix by Noah Cyrus and Labrinth
On its' own, this song is beautifully crafted. Once again, I am a huge fan of the original song, but this is a tasteful change from the majority of Cyrus' music.
6. Say So by Doja Cat
One of the many infamous TikTok songs. There's not a moment when this song comes on and someone is not doing the accompanying dance (most of the time it's me--however, I'll never download TikTok). Doja rocketed to stardom with this jam and has won countless awards after this chart-topping song. By no means is this her best song (my personal vote is for MOOO!), however, it is one of her most recognizable.
5. Tints (feat. Kendrick Lamar) by Anderson .Paak
Without exaggeration, I believe that my life didn't start until I heard this song. I very much relate to the lyrics of this song, and it's truly a shame that this is the only song that I know by Anderson .Paak. This song is a great transition to his other music, from which I hear from time to time on playlists curated by Spotify. Thank you to viral Twitter for introducing me to this song, and thank you to Spotify for feeding me the rest of Paak's music.
4. Runaway (U & I) by Galantis
Yes, I am one of those people who had only heard 'Peanut Butter Jelly' by Galantis. I had no clue that they were such a big deal in the EDM/techno genre. That's my own fault. During quarantine, I would constantly listen to this song to feel like I was at a concert surrounded by others because that's truly what I miss the most. Vibing with others and having a good time will never be the same after covid but that's something we're going to have to deal with. Here's a nice little oldie but goodie.
3. Better Not (with Wafia) by Louis the Child
There is never a time that I listened to this song, and I didn't instantly feel joy. This is one of the most mainstream songs by Louis the Child, and honestly, well done by the record company. This song takes me back to those late nights at UU on the rooftop after one too many whiskey sours... Ah, good times. You have to bop to this song, and if you don't, I'm worried about you...
2. Reflections by MisterWives
Throwback circa 2015. Recently, I've started to bring this song back into my loop of songs that I listen to every day just so I can have a little bit of positivity throughout the day.
1. V. 3005 - Beach Picnic Verison by Childish Gambino
Please, just do me a favor and youtube/Spotify/Apple Music this song. It is everything. There's no official music video, but I want every song to be a beach picnic version.
