Okay, so it's been established that we all have our days-- good and bad. However, I find that watching movies is the best way to maximize a mental health day or two. You can only be sad for so long before you are dying for a laugh. Personally, laughing is one of the best ways to turn around a mood-- which is why I am a die-hard Twitter user.
Below, I've compiled a list of some of the best movies that are guaranteed to give you quite the chuckle. It also doesn't hurt that they are extremely quotable.
1. She's the Man
At the height of Amanda Bynes' career (ma'am, we miss you come back), we were introduced to Sebastian Hastings. This movie is "loosely" based on a Shakespeare play, however, you would've never guessed that before seeing the credits. Every time I watch this film, I cry of laughter from beginning to end. I know almost every word and every song (even some songs made it onto my list of the 10 best songs to listen while sad) and still, I'm surprised by the things I see on the screen.
Can we also talk about how almost every Channing Tatum character was also named Duke after this role.
2. Rush Hour (entire trilogy)
Okay, this is probably one of the most underrated movie trilogies of all time. Rush Hour came out in 1998 and was followed by two additional hit movies. Whoever thought to cast Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in a movie is a genius and deserves a raise. Personally, I think that the 3rd movie is the best movie, although, you do need to watch the first two movies to appreciate the humor of the third.
The humor of these movies are a bit more mature than the others on this list; however, you will undoubtedly be laughing from beginning to end of all three installments.
3. Shrek (one and two only- the third on special occasions)
My favorite character is the Gingerbread Man solely because of how he is portrayed. I used to work at a summer camp and myself and other counselors adopted the persona of the Gingerbread Man because some of his "isms" could be taken as swears in the Shrek world (we weren't allowed to swear in front of the children- which was a given). It just became one of those running jokes that the kids never picked up on especially since we requested to watch it every day. I also went through a phase over winter break two years ago to watch Shrek 2 every day. I had no shame of not watching it with a kid. I am a kid at heart and the adult innuendos throughout the entire movie.
Every character brings something to the table that completes the plot and the movies would suck if you were missing one character. Gingerbread Man deserves to be recognized more than he is-- that's all I have to say.
4. Mean Girls
A lot of people wouldn't agree about this choice, but I'd like to point out that this movie shaped a lot of us to be the people that we are now. Mean Girls is a classic and I don't say that lightly. The humor in this movie is so unmatched. Lindsay Lohan rocked her role as Cady Heron and this movie brought us on a rollercoaster of emotions. This movie showed me what sarcasm was and how to perfectly execute it.
The dumbness of Karen, the obliviousness of Aaron, the bluntness of Damion and Janice made this one of the most quoted movies of all time. October 3rd is known as National Mean Girl Day, and you can't go on any social media platform without seeing an ode to this movie. Ariana Grande also paid tribute to the movie by setting it as the theme for her 'Thank You, Next.' video (which we all loved btw).
5. Baby Mama
Surprise, surprise, another Tina Fey original. Just when you thought that it couldn't get any better after Mean Girls, Fey dropped another classic with Baby Mama except this time she brought in the likings of her Saturday Night Live castmate Amy Poehler. The two brought their chemistry from off-screen onto the screen and you loved every second of it.
Whenever my friends and I get together and have a movie night, this is the first movie that's recommended because we know every single word and it's a guaranteed laugh. And some dance moves even make it to the bars when we go out!
Underrated character alert: the doorman kills me with every word that comes out of his mouth.
6. Blades of Glory
Will Ferrell and Jon Heder honestly didn't have to go this hard when they made this movie. This movie came out in 2007 and it was truly ahead of its time. Parts of this movie even got sampled in a song by Kanye (which is also a banger). I personally think that this is one of Will Ferrell's best roles (aside from Ron Burgundy- although I am not really a fan of the Anchorman series).
People will probably come for me since I didn't mention the Anchorman movies, but I just don't like them as much as this movie. Honestly, I'd chose Elf over those movies, but that's just my opinion.
My favorite comedian, Nick Swardson, also made a cameo in this movie and I about died when he looked Jimmy MacElroy in the eye and said, "Jimmy, did you get my blood?" That was very out of context, but I die of laughter every time because I know that everyone else over ooks it.
Honorable Mention: The Cat in the Hat, Step Brothers, Big Daddy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Napoleon Dynamite.
